Val’s Aussie Open Play - Day 2 (Round 1)

Val

J. Sinner comes through for us last night disposing of B. Van De Zandschulp in straight sets to even our record at 1-1. Today we have another men's play for 1st round of the Aussie Open.

Record 1-1 (0 unit)

Jakub Mensik -145 (Risk 1.45 for 1 unit) Expected start time 9pm Jan 14th.

Canadian Denis Shapovalov faces Czech Jakub Mensik on Day 2 of the 1st round of the Aussie Open. Shapovalov was shinning on tour in 2022 with plenty of success reaching the #10 ranking, but he then suffered a knee injury in October of that year and it has been all down hill for him since. He finished 2022 as the #18 ranked player as he did play another tournament. 2023 was a year to forget as the knee discomfort persisted allowing him to only play 26 matches with an underwhelming 13-13 record plummeting his ranking to #116 on tour. 2024 hasn't started any better for him as he lost 1st round match in Auckland to #37 ranked S. Ofner in straight sets 6-4 6-2, where he committed 11 double faults and only won 39% of his second serves. Mensik is an 18 year old whom is trying to make his mark on tour and had to qualify for this tournament so he has plenty of matches under his belt and is probably in better game shape than Shapovalov at this point. The line tells the story here as with Shaopovalov's pedigree and talent he should be a least a -300 favorite versus a player like Mensik, however, we have the opposite where Mensik is the favorite. Clearly Shapovalov isn't 100% healthy and linemakers do not believe he will win this match and I agree with them. Give me Mensik here.
