American T. Fritz faces Australia's A. Popyrin tonight in the men's second round of the Aussie Open. Fritz has taken over as the premier player representing the US passing J. Isner, and with all due respect to Isner, he was never able to beat the top players in the world with regularity, if his service game was off he was very beatable. Fritz is a different beast in that he has all the intangibles it takes to win a Grand Slam. Fritz was a replacement player at the ATP Nitto Finals in Milan Italy in November 2022 which is a money making tournament for the top 8 ranked players at the end of the tennis season. He put everyone on notice that he would be a force to deal with in 2023 as he made it out of the round robin by beating Rafa and F. Auger Aliassime before falling to the eventual Champion Djokovic in semis 7-6, 7-6. His opponent tonight A. Popyrin shouldn't cause Fritz too much of a challenge as he's coming off a horrendous 2022 where he had an overall losing record at 24-31 in all his matches and also had a losing record on hard court at 7-16. I cannot see Fritz losing a set in his current form even with Popyrin playing on home soil.
