NBA Bet of the Day | January 31, 2024

In this column, I’ll go through the BEST BET I’m seeing in the league today; this can be in a spread, a moneyline, an Over/Under, or a player prop.

RECAP: Another day where we got close, but we missed the mark on the NBA of the Day. The Celtics were in complete control of that game, and let the Pacers come back in the third quarter, getting outscored by 10+ points, and then not being able to close it out in the fourth quarter to cover our -7. In the month of January, we’re up five units and we’ve seen better days for sure – but that just means that we’re due for a turnaround. Let’s get it today.

Today’s pick is an EARLY one, and so it’s important to try and get this in because I feel as if this line is going to continue to move as more and more betting limits are opened. It’s on the Sharp Report and we’re seeing significant movement on the Money Handles tool in the Sharp App, and that means that we’re going to hammer it in the morning. 

The New Orleans Pelicans are traveling to Houston today to take on the Rockets. While both of these teams have maintained in the middle of the pack for most of the season, the Pelicans are the superior team record-wise, but when we look at their actual Home/Away splits, the Rockets may seem like the better team. Our numbers suggest otherwise. 

The Rockets are 17-8 at home, and are one of the most dominant home teams in the league. The Pels, for how good they are, are a middle-of-the-pack team, going 12-11 on their road games. While they struggle as the away favorites (they’re 4-5 ATS this season on the road as favorites), they still have an average margin of victory of ten points, and they (on average) clear the spread by six points. Houston is also a very good home underdog team ATS, but clearing that line by much fewer - even when they win, they aren’t winning by much. 

Not only is this play on the Sharp Report, but our Money Handles are all over it. Currently, the Pelicans own 38% of the betting handle, but 85% of the money handle, making way for a difference of 47%. At most books you can still get this number too, and our Sharp AI gives them a 56% chance of winning, and a projection of -2. Hopefully that projected hook doesn’t hurt us. 

The Rockets have been scoring the ball well in their last five, but the Pelicans rebound really well and they lock down the 3-pointer much better than most teams. 

Overall, all of our Sharp App signs are pointing to a Pelicans victory. We love it when the Money Handles, AI, and Sharp Report all align - and today is one of those days!
