Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps September 19 2022
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
RECAP: The late sharp money on the Jets at +7 was key. They covered and won straight up! Sharps expected a shootout in Detroit and they got it. Sharps were wrong about the Saints and the book won a big on the Arizona win. The Raiders were the second most wagered game in week 2.
We look for sharps to be much more active in MLB now that the NHL and NBA seasons are over however this is not the sport that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games due to many variables in MLB. Weather is one of them and probably the most important.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we will have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight.
It's primetime and we've got 2 NFL games on tap. Lots of trends point towards a Titans cover however the public and sharps don't agree. The Bills opened a 7.5 favorite on September 11th at Betonline. By the time retail books opened their lines, it was already at -8.5. It didn't take much time for the line to close at -10 on the 11th. Since then we've seen a couple of drops to -9.5 however the -10 has been consistent across all markets. The Bills own 70% of the handle. The total opened at 50 at Betonline however some books posted a 51 and the under was hit hard. Since then we have sharps betting both the over and the under but the number settled at 47.5 since the 16th.
In Philadelphia, the book is happy with the action they received on both sides. The Eagles opened at -3 and the line moved down to -1.5 and is now back up at -2.5 with 69% of the handle on the Eagles. I feel the book is still asking for more Eagles money and we will need to keep an eye on this line since it's sitting at -115. If it moves to -3 then we will see more money on the Vikings. The total was on the move also and it went up 2.5 points from 47.5 to 50.
In baseball, the only noticeable move is in Anaheim between the Mariners and Angels. The Mariners opened a -141 favorite last night and the line held up until this morning when the sharps slammed the Angels and pushed the line down to -117. 80% of the handle is on the Angels while the ticket count is on the Mariners at 60%. This is a spot where the squares believe the Mariners will not lose a 4th game to the Angels while the sharps believe that Trout and company can hit hard Gilbert who has the second highest HC% on the slate just behind Kuhl.
Good luck today
