Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps October 7, 2022
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
RECAP: The smart money was wrong on the Bucks under however it was right on Ottawa and the Bluejackets!
We look for sharps to be much more active in MLB now that the NHL and NBA seasons are over however this is not the sport that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games due to many variables in MLB. Weather is one of them and probably the most important.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we will have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight.
We welcome the MLB playoffs after a stupid last 2-3 weeks where we saw how kinds of ups and downs in our bets. We know to stay away from MLB the last couple of weeks however we just like to be abused!
The Sharp Report has 3 spots where the sharp money came in and the Mets are not one of them. However, the line did move from -131 to -148 and some books are also posting a -155. The Mets will be the squarest play of the day!
In Toronto, we saw an RLM on the Mariners that made the line move in their favor. At +128 and still money coming in on Toronto, the Mariners line moved to +116. That was a clear indication of sharp interest in the Mariners.
No sharp money on this under however the total is going to drop to 5.5 in Cleveland today.
We have 5 games in CFB today. Love these busy days!!
Interesting but expected after a steady 80% of the handle on them, Houston went from +3 to +2.5 and the book is asking for Memphis money.
In Nevada, the total took the spotlight. The sharps hit the under at 47, 46.5, and 44.5. This total also figures in the book liability section of the sharp report.
Lastly, for college football, the book had to play around the San Jose state line so they can get the handle they wanted. They opened SJST at -5 on the 2nd and they needed to push the line up to -7 to get some UNLV money. At that point, the handle went from 71% on SJST to 51% and the book dropped the line to -6.5 at around 4 pm yesterday and we haven't seen it move since then.
The NHL preseason is almost over and the teams will be dressing up most of their players in their last games. That would explain why we haven't seen much movement overnight.
The Sharp Report has been showing sharp money on the Preds all week. This is a regular season game played outside of the US and on neutral ice. The Preds opened at -175 and the line moved up to -190 however 66% of the handle is on the Sharks. Oh, hockey you are so weird but I've missed you very much.
Good luck today
