Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps October 28, 2022
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we will have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight. RECAP of yesterday's games: I made fun of a guy for betting on the Habs, that didn't end well for me however smart money was on the Sabres and the sharps were wrong. The Preds were hungry yesterday and that was an easy win. The Mavs barely covered but needed OT, that was another win. And the last game was on Washington State to cover the +7 and that wasn't an issue either. Great night overall.
This article is posted a little later than usual and I apologize. We have 6 games in the NHL and it's been a busy one.
Yes, you have guessed it. The New Jersey Devils are once again showcased in the Overnight Grind. I'll stop complaining about them when I see real progress from them but till then, I will give them no credit. Ok, Bratt is leading the lead in scoring, good for him, and Anderson, who is turning 81, is leading all goalies in GAA. The Devils opened a +128 dog and the line is at +110 with 80% of the handle on the Avs.
If you like the Bruins tonight, shop for your line. BetOnline has them at -136 while most of the books have them between -155 and -160. The Bruins are on back-to-back games and the smart money likes the rested team. Columbus opened at +143 and is currently at +123. 55% of the money is on the home team.
Here's another game that fits the back-to-back game trends. The Penguins are in Vancouver tonight and money is flooding the Pens. Pittsburgh opened a -148 early this morning and by lunchtime, it reached -172. Martin should be in tonight and he's going to have a hard time stopping the Pens.
Rittich should be between the pipes tonight since the Jets played last night. The Kings played like shit yesterday and the Jets had no business winning. Anyway, the Jets are on a back-to-back and you know it.... sharps don't like that so they smashed Arizona which will celebrate their home opener in their new Midget AAA area that fits 5000 people. The Coyotes opened at +162 and sharp money came on them at +158 and +146. The line is currently +132 and the Coyotes own 70% of the handle.
In the NBA, the totals are getting more hit than the lines. We have one big mover and it's in Orlando. With Ball out, Rozier, Martin, and Anthony doubtful sharps who got the info early smashed the under 226.5 and 224.5. The total dropped to 221 after lunchtime.
On the sharp report, we saw Yale added in the afternoon report. At the book there is sharp money only on Yale however did have to move the line accordingly based on other books. Yale moved from -2 to -3.5, dropped back down to -2.5, and at that drop, the sharps at the book came in this afternoon. Since then, the line moved back to -3 and will potentially move to -3.5 since the juice on the -3 is at -125
Last game to cover!! With Holmberg out the Bulldogs opened at -9. It followed by Downing being out for the season, McNeil being questionable and we should see Liddey who will start in his first game ever. The line moved from +9 to +6 and but the last sign of sharp money was at +7 and the sharps are really liking Florida Intl. Currently, at -6, the book wants money on LA Tech.
