Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps October 27, 2022

Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.

RECAP: Yesterday was a busy day for the start money. For those following the Jazz game, I was telling a friend over drinks that the game would end by 6 and I was so close. The game closed at -8 and everyone cashed except the squares that got on the game late. The Lakers lose again and didn't cover. The Ducks couldn't beat the Lighting which was on a b2b road game however the Oilers and the under in Cleveland were easy winners.


We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.

For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.

Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree.

The format of this article will be changed once we will have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight.

We have lots to cover today since we got some NHL, NFL, CFB, and NBA!!

The smart money was busy on 3 teams overnight in the NHL.

Buffalo is hosting Montreal and will try to remain hot after demolishing the west coast. The Habs are getting no offense apart from their 1st line and it gets even tougher on the road where they don't have the last change. The Sabres opened at -140 and are currently at -163. Someone at BetRivers made a move on the Habs at +145 but he needs to get himself checked out since it ain't happening BRO! Lastly, some teams just can't win in some arenas and this is one of them, Montreal is 1-6 in the last 7 in Buffalo and the favorites are 10-3 last 13 games.

The Preds have also received smart money and I covered that play in the NHL model.

The Kings looked really good against the Lighting and got some well-deserved respect for tonight. LA had an FF% of 65% and totally dominated that game. The Kings opened at -125 and with 60% of the handle on the Jets the line moved in LA's favor to -145.

In the NBA, the Mavs went from +2.5 to -2.5 with the news that Curry and Warren are out and Morris questionable. The Mavs couldn't beat the Pels that were missing 3 starters.... just saying.

The TNF game will not be recapped tomorrow but it's good we talk about all the moves this week. The Bucs opened at -4.5 on the 18th and dropped to -3 and -2.5 on the 23rd while the books were aggressively getting some heavy money on the Ravens. With 83% of the handle on the Ravens, the book moved the line to -1.5 and that's when a shit load of money started coming on the Bucs moving their handle from 17% to 42%. With all these swings, the book is in a position where it will make money no matter what the outcome is.

I really don't have much to go over in CFB. Southern Miss has been on the sharp report the last 2 days and overnight money started coming in on Louisiana therefore I had to remove Southern Miss. The sharp report is still showing Washington state and there is no sign of sharp money coming in on Utah however if can see the sharps get very active if this line drops to -6.5. Washington State opened a 9 pts underdog and own 80% of the handle which forced the book to make Utah more attractive by dropping the line to -7.
