Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps November 7, 2022
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we will have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight. RECAP of yesterday's games: None to recap! It's a new week! Good luck to everyone!
Today we welcome back college basketball. There are way too many games (126) and I like to stay away from a sport for the first week or so of the new season. Books are very careful and move the lines every time a sharp sneezes. Let's take a look at Baylor, they opened at -39 at Betonline, and with max bet limits of $1150, the line moved to -44.
In the NBA we have a couple of interesting spots. We covered this game in the NBA model article. The Thunder opened at +2.5 and the line swang to -2.5. We have no sharp money at the book however the info a gathered is that sharps in the US markets have hit the +2.5, +1.5, and -1.5. The model likes the Pistons. Who is right?
In Orlando, we have confirmed sharp money on the under. The under opened at 231.5 and we have a big sharp that hit the under 228.5 and it's currently at 224.
Another under that got slammed is in Charlotte. the Wizards have been terrible last 2 games and smart money dropped on the under 219 and 217 pushing the books to adjust the total to 214 this morning.
In the NHL we have sharp money on the Blues at +165 however that happened only after the book moved the Bruins from -166 to -191. It's possible that sharps elsewhere were responsible for the move on Boston however at my book the sharps hit the Blues.
The Oilers are a clear-cut favorite from the smart money against the struggling Capitols. I wrote about this game in the NHL model article. Even though the Oilers had 2 rough losses to the Devils and Stars, I must agree here that they should roll over the Caps. Market makers opened the Oilers at -124 and the line moved to -135, -146, and now -154. If you like to be a contrarian, buying low on the Caps is your spot but I'm staying away.
RECAP: Thunder, Orlando under, Charlotte under,
