Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps November 2, 2022
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we will have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight. RECAP of yesterday's games: The smart money is HOT HOT HOT!!! Ohio, the Ducks, and Golden Knights were all winners! The only loser was Kent! PS: and myself for betting on the Sharks. Once again we are spoiled with 4 sports going on tonight. Ok ok, we have small slates in MLB, CFB, and the NHL however it still gives us more options.
We will start with the busiest which is the NBA. The Hawks are in New York tonight and my NBA model loves them. We haven't seen sharp money on them at the book however, globally, the line is moving in the Hawks favor. The Knicks opened a 4 pt favorite yesterday afternoon and it instantly dropped to -2 with 70% of the handle on the Hawks. It is possible that we see more movement in this game since the bet max limits are still low at around 5k per bet.
The Bulls are on a b2b tonight and my model has value on the Hornets but the line is moving the other way. Anyway, in this game, the move is on the total and not the side. The total opened at 229 at Betonline this morning and moved between 229 and 227 until the last hour when it took a drop to 224. The under has 80% of the handle and the smart money is expecting another excellent defensive outing from the Bulls.
I have nothing to report in the NHL and MLB.
Both CFB games have seen significant moves on the line. Northern Illinois opened at -4 and jumped to -6 at Betonline. Some US markets have started posting a -6.5. I believe this line hasn't stopped moving since the max bet limit is still at 5k versus Bowling Green at 28k.
Speaking of Bowling Green, They opened at -2.5 Sunday night and books pushed the line to the key number 3 with 78% of the early handle on them. On Monday, the book moved the line to -3.5 indicating that they are looking for Western Michigan money but they didn't get it until the line was moved to +5 this morning. Since then it dropped to -4.5 however the book finally got what it wanted and the handle is at 52% on Bowling Green. The book has opened its max bet limits to 28k per bet for this game which indicates that they have found a balance in their handle and their number.
