Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps January 4 2022

Anthony P

While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.

Market Makers are sportsbooks that are first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by setting their bet limits lower when posting a spread or moneyline before
everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits.

Well, the sharps were hot last night. The Devils gave them a little scare in the 2nd period but they took care of business in the third. The Canuck came back from behind once again and won in OT. Utah took care of business and finally covered a freaking game!!!

MNF was insane in terms of the line movement. The game closed with the Browns at -1 while the line swag from -3 to +3.5 to back -1. The total stays under while late money pushed the line over its opening of 40.5. The sharps were wrong with the Oilers who have now lost 4 straight. Mavs go under the total just like I expected and I'll take that win over what the sharps expected.

Today we have a different layout for this article since I ran out of time going thru all the moves.

In the NBA we have some in most of the games. Sharps have hit the following lines and totals:

Toronto over 223: the total is now at 225 and my model likes the under.

NY knicks under 209: this total is now at 206.5

LA Lakers under 232: this total moved down 3 points and its at 229 and close to my total projections

In the NHL we have a busy slate and it's hard to find early confirmations for goalies. Apart for Reimer (San Jose) none of the coaches have confirmed their goalies for tonight. These are the early sharp positions:

Tampa Bay: opened at -180 and now at -225. This line is inflated as per my model.

Colorado: opened at -185 and now at -250. This line is also inflated as per my model

Anaheim: Betonline opened this line at -113 while others ranged between -120 and -125. This line moved to -141

Nashville: Biggest and most interesting move. Nashville opened a +158 dog and now is at +102

There is a lot to cover in CBB however I expected more movement. The totals are the ones the most affected. These are the biggest moves:

Ohio over: opened at 129 and now at 133

Auburn over: opened at 141.5 and now at 145.5

Eastern Michigan under: opened at 138 and now at 135

Rutgers under: This is a big drop. Opened at 137 and now at 132.5

Minnesota opened at +8 and now at +6.5

LSU was a pickem at the opening and now at -2.5

Kansas under: This total opened at 147 and now at 144
