Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps December 8, 2022

Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.

We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.

For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.

Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree.

The format of this article will be changed once we have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight.

RECAP of yesterday's games: Both the Magic and Bulls did their jobs yesterday and the smart money went 2-0

It's actually a quiet day in the NHL, CBB, and NBA and I like it like that!

Market maker Betonline opened the Spurs as a 2-point favorite yesterday afternoon while many other books stayed quiet and waited to see what would happen in early action. The Rockets were hit with smart money at +2 and by 5 pm yesterday they were 1 pt favorites. I covered this game in the NBA model article this morning. Nonetheless the move, the Rockets still own the bulk of the tickets and money.

In Portland this morning we've seen the line flip from +1 to -1 for the Trail Blazers. I like the over better in this game but the smart money is on Portland finally being the healthiest they've been all season long. The Nuggets are still without Porter Jr, and have lost 3 straight by an average ATS margin of 10.5 points. The last time they met in Portland the Nuggets took a 25-point beating and the Joker was held to only 9 pts. I can see why the smart money likes Portland.

It feels impossible to handicap hockey this season. You will have dogs go 7-2 one day and 2-7 the other. The road teams went 5-2 yesterday and can do 0-5 tonight.

Some sources are stating that Coppley night start tonight instead of a rested Jonathan Quick. The markets seem to give the Kings a better chance of winning with him instead with Quick. The line moved 10 pts in the Kings favor but that is not where the sharps focused. This morning the total dropped from 6.5 to 6 with 65% of the handle on the over. This is a clear indication that the sharps are on the under. The Leafs shut down the Stars last game and this game should be a tight one as per my notes in the NHL model article.

One of our CBB DFS coaches loves Iowa State tonight and so does the smart money. Iowa State opened a 7.5 underdog yesterday and sharps at the book hit to +6, +5, and +4.5.
