Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps December 12, 2022 (1)
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight. RECAP of yesterday's games: We just celebrated a perfect day just to go 1-4 on the following edition. Only the under in LA cashed. The Devils, Oilers, Preds, and UC San Diego lost.
It's a quiet day in the NBA. The sharp report is showing 1 game and its the over in Houston but i saw some weird movement in that total. The boys at the book hit the over 224.5 but this total opened at 226 and dropped all the way to 222.5. There must be money on the under in other makets but at the book the sharp money is on the over. I wont track this game in the recap but I still wanted to cover a game in the NBA.
Huge slate in the NHL. The Leafs are now at -475 and sharps hit this line at -385 and -410. You can start your parlays with the Leafs tonight but no one should be a -500 fav in the NHL.
Carolina and Detroit are well rested and it was needed for the Redwings who have allowed over 40 SOG in their last 2 games. I have this line at -182 and they opened at -140 at Betonline. Smart money came in on the Canes this morning and pushed the line to -160. My model still shows value at -160.
The Preds offensive issues continue and they were blanked by the Blues last night. Edmonton lost in Minnesota in a revenge game for the Wild. I love the Oilers in this spot however Campbell is in nets tonight and he has a GAA of 4.12 and a SV% of 0.872. That is scary. The Preds definately have the edge between the pipes tonight. Edmonton is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings and the favorite is 16-6 in the last 22 games. The Preds are 2-0 on zero rest and the Oilers are 2-1. The sharp money likes the Oilers moving tthe number from -115 to -133.
The total in Alabama was slammed yester and this morning. Opened at 146.5 at some US markets and currently at 152.5. Memphis on fire scoring 80+ last 4 games and Alabama almost scored over 100 points in 3 games this season. My model has this game at 144. Recent matchups went way over with average scores of over 160.
To recap: Carolina -160, Edmonton -133, Alabama over 152.5
