Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps December 1, 2022
Anthony P
While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.
Market Makers are sportsbooks that are the first to post a line and set the market. They will control risk by lowering their bet limits when posting a spread or Moneyline before everyone else. Once the market adjusted, they max their bet limits. Talbot has been hot and won his last 8 starts but don't discount Jarry he's been solid this year.
We look for sharps to be much more active in the NHL and NBA since the MLB is almost over however this is not these are not sports that sharps are the most excited about since market makers tend to have very low max limits early on most of the games. The NBA sees much more action than the NHL.
For VIPs, your best start would be to look at the morning sharp report, which will give you an excellent summary of what happened overnight. In the afternoon, the sharp report updates and games might be added or removed based on what happened in the morning. The last update is around 4-5 pm EST and not much movement is expected after that. If there is movement, it will usually be square money loading up on games before they start.
Another tool that can be used with the sharp report is the MLB model on our website. Comparing the sharp money with our projection can help you make your own picks if both the model and sharp agree. The format of this article will be changed once we have multiple sports running every day and the focus will go back to looking at lines that moved the most overnight. RECAP of yesterday's games: Sacramento over and Lipscomb did their jobs and cashed however Toronto got destroyed and Santa Clare didn't cover.
This brings us to 9-3 in the last 3 days.
We will skip the NBA since there is only 1 game and not much to write about.
We have 11 games in the NHL and not one single sharp money signal on the sharp report. In the US market, there is one game that got hit this morning and it's Vancouver. They opened at +127 and dropped to -115 with 65% of the handle on Florida.
It's been quiet in the other games and I'll come back and update this article if I see more changes.
UPDATE (12 PM)
It took a little bit of time however the smart money landed on the Wild which is facing the Oilers, who, you have guessed it, is on in B2B situation. The Oilers are also in a 3in4 and 4in6 situation. They've done well in those spots and are 5-1 in both spots therefore we can expect some regression. The Wild opened at -130 and the line jumped to -150 just before lunch.
Kansas is currently the 4th most wagered game in the book and most of the sharp action is on the over. I am not a fan of Seton Hall's offense therefore I can't really agree here. The total opened at 135.5 yesterday afternoon, jumped to 136.5 overnight, and more money this morning forced the book to push the total to 139.
Valposaison opened a 12-pt underdog at market maker Betonline and I believe the smart money was waiting for the books to increase the max bet limits before hitting on the Beacons. At about 2k max this game didn't receive much interest, at 5k (at around 10am) multiple bets were placed and the book dropped the line from +11 to +8.5.
To recap Vancouver, Minnesota Wild, Valpo
