Fourth Down Decision Model: Expected Points Explained

Fourth Down Decision Model: Expected Points Explained

Should a coach punt, kick or go for it on fourth-and-two? Most fans answer with the conversion rate alone, and that answer misses most of the picture. A fourth down decision model values what happens after the play too: field position, who has the ball, how much time is left. You will build the tree branch by branch, price a go-for-it attempt against a punt and a field goal, and see why expected points and win probability can point in different directions late in a game. That matters when you bet a spread or total and the other side's coach is about to make a call. Knowing why a call was smart changes how you read the box score.
