One takedown percentage cannot tell you who wins the grappling. Reading MMA takedown stats well means treating a fight as a chain: reaching the clinch, completing the takedown, then holding a dominant position and doing damage. You will multiply a three-stage chain of 0.6, 0.5 and 0.4 to get 0.12 per opportunity, and see why four independent attempts at 40% give a surprisingly high chance of at least one success while real attempts are not independent. The lesson separates control time from scoring impact, since a takedown does not automatically win a round. Use it to judge grappling props and round totals by what happens after the fight hits the mat.
Learning objectives
Model grappling as a sequence of connected states, not one takedown percentage.
