Veteran S. Wawrinka takes on Aussie A. De Minaur in round 1 of the Monte Carlo Open tomorrow morning. 2024 has been great for De Minaur to this point accumulating a 15-5 record, winning the Acapulco Open and reaching the final of Rotterdam. Unfortunately for him, we have now moved to the clay court portion of the season and it is the surface that he has the least amount of success on. Since he started his ATP career in 2015 his career record on clay is only 55-46 and has had a winning record on clay only once (2022) since 2017. Waiting for him tomorrow morning is the 39 year old Wawrinka, Wawrinka's best days are clearly behind him but the savvy veteran can still hold his own on clay court, as it is his best surface, his career record of 279-127 on clay speaks for itself. With the fact that clay courts are not fast playing surfaces, De Minaur losses the advantage he would have playing over Wawrinka, I like the veteran to take a set from De Minaur in the match.
