NBA Bet of the Day | October 23, 2024

In this column, I’ll go through the BEST BET I’m seeing in the league today; this can be in a spread, a moneyline, an Over/Under, or a player prop. I’ll explain my reasoning below, and even add in a couple of picks I also like for today.

RECAP: Yesterday’s play was definitely too good to be true, as the Timberwolves had a horrible second quarter and were never able to quite get back in the game, losing to the Lakers on opening night. That’s our first loss of the season, but don’t worry… I don’t plan on losing the rest of the season.

One of the best defensive players in the league is probably out in this game, and that means that we have to pounce on one of the biggest trends of the season last year - and we’re even showing a little value when it comes to Sharp AI. Let’s dive in. 

Ja Morant and company are heading West to take on Lauri Markkanen and the Utah Jazz, who hit this bet in 55% of their total games last season, and I don’t see that changing much at all when it comes to this season’s totals as well. Memphis was not as favorable in this category, but were without their biggest playmaker for most of the year. 

Whether they were home underdogs, home favorites, or home anything, one thing was in common last year when it came to the Utah Jazz… the over was incredibly favorable, going over by an average of four points per game last season at home. 

And they’re facing an elite offense without its best defensive weapon in Jaren Jackson Jr.. Headlined by Desmond Bane and Ja Morant, this is a Memphis team that will be looking to push the pace, create high-quality scoring opportunities, and at their height, compete for a championship this season. Two out of three of their games last season ended as an over, especially in Utah, where over 240 points were scored. This is a Utah team that may not be good, but they are definitely fun, headlined by Lauri Markennan and a really healthy team overall. Markennan should have a great night, considering the Grizzlies were not great against big men last season. 

And yet, the Grizzlies should also be able to score tonight, as Ja Morant is facing the worst defense in the league last season against point guards. This means that he should be able to not only score the ball, but move the ball to his sharpshooters in Desmond Bane and Santi Aldama. 

Overall, I expect a lot of scoring, and we’re getting a half point of value when it comes to our Sharp AI, which projects this game at 229.5. While that isn’t much, any value can help, and this game should go way over.
