MLB Bet of the Day | April 1, 2024

In this column, I’ll go through the BEST BET I’m seeing in the league today; this can be in a spread, a moneyline, an Over/Under, or a player prop.

RECAP: We’re on a really bad start to our MLB season, and I hope that this turns around quickly. We won our MLB of the Day, which was really great – but we dropped the ball when it came to the rest of our plays. The under in our MLB of the Day was super simple, as these two pitchers were meant to dominate; but alas, we’re still down in the dumps. Let’s get it back today.  

April 1st, 2024

The Washington Nationals are taking on a team that just SWEPT the Marlins, and are on the road once against to take on another NL East team. The Pittsburgh Pirates are a hot offense right now, which makes it the perfect time to buy low on the Nats, which is exactly what we’re doing today. 

The Nationals are throwing SP Mackenzie Gore today, who had an up-and-down season, and overall, an up-and-down start to his career. He was one of the pieces from the Juan Soto trade, and he started off last season INCREDIBLY hot, throwing a sub-three ERA in his first month after Spring Training in 23, and he had a really solid month of ST to start this year, as well. He starts off hot to campaigns, and we’re going to look for that to continue today. Plus, against this Pittsburgh starting lineup, he’s been really good, allowing an xBA of .135 in 20 plate appearances. He’s gone deep into games in ST, and he should be ready to go for today’s game. 

On the other side is Marco Gonzales, who is apparently on the Pirates now. Last season for the Mariners was rough on the 32-year-old, who was recovering from injury most of last year, and now sees a change of scenery. Gonzales has never been high-powered or reliable, but does have one of the best chase rates in the league. Lucky for us, Washington’s offense has looked really good to begin the year, behind Keibert Ruiz and CJ Abrams. 

Both teams have hit nothing but overs so far this year, but I don’t expect a high-scoring game, to be honest. While the Pirates are averaging nearly ten runs per game to begin this season, there’s very little reason to expect that output to continue. 

I really, genuinely like the makings of this Nats lineup, and I think that Mackenzie Gore will give 5-6 good innings of work, while their lineup should be able to get to Marco. Let’s hope for a good bullpen game out of Washington as well to secure this victory, and not give it up (like they did yesterday).
