Val's Australian Open Plays - Quarterfinals (Day 1)

We sweep the board going 4-0 +3 units last night with none of our plays ever in jeopardy of losing, Fruhvirtova won the first set bagging that play right away, really wish I would have trusted my gut more and sprinkled a little on the moneyline, while Wolf, De Minaur and Pliskova were all straight sets winners with ease.

American C. Gauff faces off with Latvia's J. Ostapenko in the quarterfinals tonight. As I mentioned earlier this week, Gauff has pretty much been kicking ass and taking names since the start of the 2023 tennis season, she's now 8-0 has set to lose a set to an opponent. Even though we've reached the quarterfinals and at a point where you'd expect matches to be tighter as the field get dwindled down I just don't see that happening here with Ostapenko. Hard court is by far the worst surface to play on for Ostapenko and this is the best showing for her ever at the Aussie Open as the furthest she's ever reached prior was the third round, she's made it one round further in 2023 but her journey will end in straight sets tonight to Gauff.

Hubert Hurkacz +145 (Start time apx 10pm EST)

Poland's H. Hurkacz takes on American S. Korda in a quarterfinal matchup tonight. You almost feel that Korda had no choice to be a pro tennis player in life as both his father Petr Korda and mother Regina Rajchtorva were former professionals with Petr being a lot more successful on the men's tour. Although he's still young Korda hasn't been able to replicate his father's success just yet. For Hurkacz, I feel for some reason or another doesn't get the respect he deserves by lines makers. In his third round matchup versus D. Shapovalov, the line was -110 Hurkacz and considering he'd beaten Shapovalov in 4 of their 5 prior meetings, you would have expected a higher line. Trust me I learnt the hard way as I picked Shapovalov, tonight he faces Korda as an underdog and Hurkacz has won their only previous matchup in straight sets 6-3 6-3 in 2021 at Delray Beach. The old saying goes "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me". Well my Polish friend, I'm finished being a fool and will back you tonight.
