Overnight Grind : Market Makers VS Sharps November 22, 2023

While most of us are sleeping, Market Makers and Sharps are adjusting the markets so that by the time we wake up and are ready to bet, the markets have adjusted in favour of the sportsbook. Let's take a quick look at some games where the sportsbooks had to make some adjustments based on heavy sharp interest.

Market Makers are pivotal figures in sports betting, shaping the market by setting initial lines. They employ a risk management strategy, starting with lower bet limits to assess early betting patterns and then increasing limits as the market adjusts.

The morning sharp report summarizes overnight developments and is a valuable resource for PRO subscribers. Daily updates keep you informed about changes, with the final update around 4-5 pm EST. Any later movements often result from square money before game time.

Now, let's delve into today's showdown between the market makers and the sharps.

RECAP of yesterday's games: I started this article while the Raptors were still playing. Doesn't look good for them going into the 4th quarter.

Welcome to a midweek betting extravaganza! With a packed schedule in both the NHL and NBA this Wednesday, there's no shortage of action for sports bettors. Let's dive into the key movements and where the smart money is heading.

NHL: Devils and Blue Jackets Gaining Traction

In the NHL, we're seeing some significant line movements, especially with the New Jersey Devils and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Devils, who opened at -136 against Detroit, have seen their line surge to -160, with a staggering 90% of the handle backing them. It's clear that bettors have little faith in Detroit, and we can anticipate the Devils' moneyline to climb even higher, possibly north of -165.

On the other hand, the Columbus Blue Jackets, despite a dismal 1-9 record in their last 10 games, are surprisingly drawing a lot of betting interest for their home game against Chicago. The Blackhawks, struggling with their own set of issues, aren't faring much better with a 3-7 record in their last 10. The money is flowing towards Columbus, who moved from -134 to -147 by Tuesday afternoon.

An interesting scenario is unfolding in Pittsburgh, where the Penguins, fresh off a shutout win against the Golden Knights, are not getting the respect they might deserve against the New York Rangers. The Pens opened at -116 but saw their odds shift to +100 throughout the day, indicating a lack of confidence from the betting public.

NBA: Favorites Attracting Early Bets

Shifting gears to the NBA, where a whopping 14 games are set to entertain, the early betting patterns are favoring the favorites. Although we haven't seen massive line movements, the trend is clear. Out of the current seven game lines available, six favorites have seen their odds increase. The Atlanta Hawks moved from -3 to -4, while the Boston Celtics saw a jump from -4.5 to -5.5. Other teams like Sacramento, OKC, Houston, and Minnesota experienced modest increases between 0.5 to 1 point.

College Basketball: A Quiet Front with Notable Moves

Surprisingly, the college basketball scene is relatively quiet, with sharp bettors seemingly waiting for the books to adjust the betting limits upward. However, some movements are worth noting. Colgate, for instance, saw their line move from -2.5 to -4, and Sam Houston State jumped from -9.5 to -11. It appears that sharps are biding their time, looking for more favorable lines before making their moves.

Betting Insights

As we gear up for a busy Wednesday, the trends are clear: In the NHL, the Devils and Blue Jackets are drawing significant interest, while the Penguins' matchup against the Rangers is one to watch closely. In the NBA, favorites are the early choice among bettors, with the Hawks and Celtics leading the charge. College basketball remains a game of patience, with sharp bettors playing the waiting game.
