Mitch's Bet of the Day | August 27, 2023
In this column, I’ll go through the BEST BET I’m seeing in the league today; this can be in a spread, a moneyline, an Over/Under, or a player prop. I’ll explain my reasoning below, and even add in a couple of other picks I also like for today. OVERALL RECORD: 127-88-3, +39.85RECAP: We find ourselves extremely close to forty units gained throughout this MLB season, and we’re feeling incredibly good about our picks recently - we went 2-0 in our plays yesterday, including an absolute blowout in Seattle for our Bet of the Day. The Mariners are just so hot right now that it’s hard to stay away from them.
August 27, 2023PICK: Chicago Cubs MLA quick story: Chicago Cubs long reliever Mark Leiter, Jr. has an incredible interview talking about how Javier Assad is one of the best pitchers in the MLB. It’s one of the most absurd, out-of-pocket interviews I’ve ever seen. It’s incredible, and I highly encourage you to go and watch it.
Anyways, today we’re going to back one of the best pitchers in the MLB, Cubs SP Javier Assad. In his last four starts in the month of August, he’s only given up seven earned runs over 22 innings pitched, including two quality starts during that stretch. He isn’t going to accumulate a lot of strikeouts, but the 26 year old has one of the most unique pitching sets in all of baseball; he throws six different pitches, including a killer cutter and sinker combination, and he’ll mix in the slider, changeup, and curveball every once in a while. He keeps hitters off-balance, and on the road this season, he’s been dominant, allowing a WHIP of only 1.03.
On the other side, the Pirates are throwing newly-acquired Bailey Falter, who has yet to win a game this season. Between the Phillies and Pirates, he just plain struggles at home this season; but he’s been pretty good overall since being traded. Yet, the numbers might not be as rock solid as on the surface, as he’s still allowed a WHIP of 1.40 during that stretch.
The Cubs’ biggest problem is that they stink on Sundays. In the third game of a series, they’re abysmal, and they’re only 10-11 after a win in game two. The Pirates aren’t much better, and are 7-14 when they lose game two of the series. This is a rock and a hard place here, people. And while neither team is currently tearing it up offensively, ranking in the lower third of teams in OPS, the Cubs still have the advantage in nearly every statistical offensive category over the past fifteen days. The Cubs are just the hotter offense.
And have you already forgotten? The Cubs have one of the best pitchers in the league pitching today. Back Chicago.
